Lean construction and Building Information Modelling (BIM) are central means of ongoing transformation in the construction industry. BIM consists of a set of tools, processes, and technologies, facilitated by digital machine-readable information about a building, which is able to provide the basis for new construction capabilities and changes in the roles and relationships between project team members (Sacks et al., 2018). Lean Production is a managerial philosophy originated in the automobile industry that has been adapted with success by different sectors. Based on that philosophy, several new operations management concepts and principles have been successfully adopted in the construction industry, with the goal of eliminating waste and improving value generation (Koskela, 2000). Both topics have attracted the interest of the Construction Management academic community, and although these are originally separate approaches, there is much synergy between them. The aim of this special issue of Engineering, Construction, and Architectural Management is to explore the interactions between BIM functionalities and Lean Production concepts and principles. Those interactions were initially pointed out ten years ago in a highly cited paper by Sacks et al. (2010). This special issue will be an opportunity to revisit the theme and report the advances that have been made in the last ten years.
Potential themes for papers include, but are not limited to: Production system design for flow and value with the support of BIM; Last planner system and the use of BIM to support collaboration; Location based planning and 4D visualization of construction schedules; Automated generation of drawings and documents to support production management; Visual management and digitalization; Automated design checking and elimination of waste; Management of industrialized building systems with the support of Lean and BIM; Using BIM and Lean to support flexible production systems; Role of BIM for improving standardization in Lean Production systems; Exploring learning approaches in project management by using Lean and BIM; BIM and clients requirement management; Simulation of Lean Production systems and the use of visualization techniques; Using BIM to support logistics management; Use of model data for predictive analysis of building performance; Integrated production control (quality, safety, time, cost, etc.) with the support of BIM.
